Report to Members – November 2018
Fall is here and looking as beautiful as always! I can’t decide which season is my favourite. Spring because everything starts fresh and green, summer because of the warm sunny days, fall because of the gorgeous yellow and orange leaves or winter…well that one is harder to love…lots of rain. Of course that’s why our trees are so big and green.
Our Thanksgiving lunch was so delicious! Thanks to our Kitchen Director Sandi and her husband Rainer who cooked the turkey and stuffing and Linda and Liz who took care of the potatoes and cranberry sauce and of course all the volunteers that set up, served and cleaned up. It was well attended by 60 members. Our wonderful entertainment was by KC & Margot.
The RCMP were here for an information session on the Secure-Us program. Interesting note – black out your address on your car insurance papers so if your car is broken into at the mall the culprit will not have your home address. Also lock the door between the garage and the inside of your house.
Thanks to Leon our chairs have been repaired and are not cluttering the hallway anymore. If you come across a chair that needs repairs please let one of the Directors know.
The bus to Victoria on October 30 was full and by the sounds of it everyone had a great time. Bill Cove from the Qualicum Senior’s Centre arranges these trips and then offers our Centre seats on the bus.
October 31 we started up the chair fitness again. Melanie is our Instructor. Please come and support this class. Wednesdays at 2pm. You may be sitting on a chair but you are definitely getting a good workout!
For more of a workout try our fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 9 and 10 am. Theresa is leading these classes. You can tell that everyone enjoys these classes…there’s always laughter and smiling faces as the participants leave the exercise area.
Saturday, December 1 at 10am we will be decorating the Centre for Christmas. Following that will be a potluck at noon. If you wish, just come for the potluck with your favourite dish and admire our decorating skills. There’s a poster with all the information on the Members bulletin board.
Our Seniors Chorus are putting on their winter concert on Saturday December 8 at 2pm. Tickets are $7 for members and $10 for the public. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
The bus trip to Victoria on December 11th will not be stopping at the Casino this time. The focus will be Buchart Gardens. Cost: $80
The Centre will be closed December 24th to 28th. We will also be closed for New Year’s Day. This will give our Volunteers and Board Members a much needed rest so they can start the New Year with lots of energy!
Saturday, January 5 at 1pm we will be putting on a Ukrainian Christmas Lunch. Tickets are $10. Members and guests only please. Tickets will go on sale December 3rd. Music by Judy Palipowski.
You might have noticed that all of our special events are in the afternoon. This is because so many of our members prefer not to travel home in the dark especially if the weather is miserable.
This time of year the days are shorter and wetter and many seniors don’t venture out because of the weather. If you know of someone that is confined to their home give them a call or drop in on them and if you can offer them a ride to one of our activities please do so. Being social is such an important part of our lives. It gives us a feeling of belonging and takes away some of the loneliness that comes with being in a house or apartment by ourselves.
Thank you for being the wonderful members that you are. It’s such a pleasure to come in and volunteer when we know that we’re making a difference in the lives of the people who come through our doors.
