August 2024 Newsletter

2024-08-31 Last Updated on: 2024-09-03

As you are probably all aware by now, the centre has experienced a security issue with our Mailchimp account. I’m sure you are all saying, what the heck is a Mailchimp account. Well, this is what we use to send out e-mails to all our members quickly. You will have already received an e-mail from the centre going into further details. We are working hard to get this running smoothly. Thank you for your patience with this.

This is your second Newsletter this month just to let you know what will be happening next month. Included with this Newsletter is a new Schedule for the fall so you can choose all the different things you wish to be involved in. I have an envelope with four $5.00 bills in it, so I can attend Liz’s Gentle Chair Fitness & Yoga class on Wednesdays. I have no excuse for not going. Last Tuesday, I tripped over a hose and hit the shed door with my face. I now have a black eye and very sore knees. My body is in great need of strengthening my core. You may wonder about the envelope on my desk? This is keeping my excuses away. Go to your bank and get the change you need for classes, lunches, and coffee. You will then have no excuse either to attend what you like at the Centre, and you know you’ll have fun!

We all have a big Thank-you from the Centre going out to Choices Market for hosting a B.B.Q fundraiser from September 6th to the 8th from 11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. This event will take place in their parking lot with all proceeds going to the Seniors Centre for our on-going maintenance. There will also be 10% off in the store, including sale items. I love going to Choices because of the variety of items they carry. The store is open, lots of light and I can always find a staff member to help me. I like durum wheat products for all my pasta dishes and they have a great selection. The ready food section also will fill the fussiest appetite and everything in this section makes my mouth water. We are so lucky to have this new store in our town and as a friend of ours said they don’t have one of these stores in Abbotsford where he lives and he wishes they did. We are hoping for a good turnout from the Centre going both to the store to shop and buying a hot dog or hamburger for their lunch. This would be an easy way to treat a friend to lunch (I’m open on those 3 days, just saying) so support the store, and the Centre, and go home smiling for the good deed you’ve just done! So drop in, save money and say hello to the volunteers from the Centre who will be assisting with the B.B.Q.

The Centre will be opening full-time Monday to Friday beginning on September 3rd with the exception of Friday, September 6th. We will be closed for in-house maintenance, which will keep all of us safe and warm for the upcoming season.

Brian, our technology guy, is back starting September 9th, and every second Monday after that. You get a free, one-on-one, 45-minute training session and can get help on cell phones, laptops, tablets, or any other device. If you are anything like the rest of us, these devices can be challenging at times, and I’m using that term very loosely. The sign-up sheets are on the members’ bulletin board. Just remember to bring your device with you and to have it fully charged.

In each of my Newsletters I ask for help, for you to volunteer in the Kitchen or with supervising in the mornings or afternoon shifts. Another request I’ve had for any of you who like to cook is to try your hand at hot lunches on Fridays. You would need to prepare lunch for 10 to 12 people, and I know all of us have a favourite dish we’d like to share. I was thinking I’d like to do a pierogi casserole with other fixings, what do you think you can do? The Centre pays for the ingredients so there is no cost to you and you’ll have help in the kitchen. This is a great way to meet new friends and surprise the ones you have. Something to think about for the fall. If you would like to suggest something and volunteer for it, please contact the office at (250) 586-5999. The tentative hot lunch Fridays are as follows:

  • September 13 – Lasagna with Caesar salad and Texas toast
  • October 4 – Shepherd’s pie with roasted vegetables and salad
  • December 6 – Roast beef with gravy, Yorkshire pudding, veggies and mashed potatoes
  • January 10, 2025 – Ukrainian Christmas

Also in the works is a Thanksgiving luncheon on Saturday, October 19.

September is just around the corner and I’m looking forward to seeing you and hearing your summer stories so till then enjoy our next bout of sunshine.
