June 2024 Newsletter

2024-06-25

Hi Everyone,

The weeds are growing beautifully, so it must be June!!! It’s getting really close to the middle of the year, and only 6 months until Christmas, Wow! I know you’re wondering about my sunflowers; some are 12 inches, and some are smaller, but with this strange weather we’re having they are surviving. The rest of the garden is fine and we’re finally eating our own lettuce, yummy. As long as we can, we’ll have a garden and enjoy the fruits of our labour. We have a bumper blueberry crop and I’ll make some muffins soon so you can have a taste when they’re ready.

Our board meeting gave me lots of information to share with you this month. Our kitchen will be having new rules for the Friday lunch as it resumes. It seems some of you have signed up for the lunch and then didn’t show up. This costs our kitchen money as they buy the food based on the number of people attending. From now on when you sign-up for our hot lunch you will have to pay for it then. Also, Debra will only be baking scones until the end of June. Debra will be taking the summer off. A big thank you to Debra for taking on this job, your tasty scones will be missed, and we’ll look forward to September.

I guess you’re wondering about the summer schedule, it will be attached to this newsletter. The Centre will only be open Tuesday to Thursday so our teachers and volunteers can have a rest and maybe a holiday. I would like YOU to start thinking about the fall and where you would like to volunteer. Since joining the Centre, I have met some great and caring people. New friendships have been formed and much laughter has been had. I never leave the Centre on a Monday afternoon without a story to tell my husband Bill. I look forward to seeing my Canasta friends and to hear about what’s new in their lives. I look forward to having a lunch I didn’t cook, and who knows who will show-up at the table and will share just a little of their life.

The Centre has a heartbeat, and all of you who joined are a part of that heart. Our son Richard and his wife Danielle play a part in our Centre by keeping it decorated and doing odd jobs that need doing. They work behind the scenes, and we don’t see them often. We thank you for your kindness. Kate (our secretary) and Andy, her husband do many things behind the scenes as well, and they also need to be thanked for their kindnesses too. What will we be thanking You for come the fall?

We would like to thank Diane, a neighbour of mine and Kate’s for her wonderful donation of all the tomato, pumpkin and pepper plants. She started growing things each spring during COVID to keep busy and had lots left over this year. She was going to put them into her compost, but Andy sprang into action and brought them to the Centre for donations. How wonderful.

The winner of our Thrifty’s gift certificate this month is Lynn Boulanger. Congratulations from the Centre.

The Centre has air conditioning so if you’re hot, come to the Centre and get cool! Until next month take care of yourselves.
